10 yr Old Boy

by Kathy
(Texas)

My son is your typical 10 yr old kid, he wants to run, play football and make friends. He is very sweet and compassionate and wants to fit in the problem is he has sensory issues that keep him from being "like everyone else". He has poor muscle tone and coordination, poor tactile perception and hypo to movement.

We only learned of sensory issues last year and have educated ourselves greatly. Great improvement with help though our OT. We are looking for ideas in the classroom. He has trouble "taking" looks and sounds from other kids, he becomes aggravated easily and has outburst in the classroom towards these children... has anyone had any experiences like this?

My daughter (soon to be 10) has yet to be diagnosed with SPD but I do now how you feel. She tries really hard to help everyone and the children treat her like a leopard.

I have talked to her old pediatrician and school but no one is helping me. I am now acting on my own and I am going to have her evaluated. I feel once this takes place, I will bring that evaluation into the school and go from there. I feel that she might be better off in a small school setting. I feel that she sometimes gets overwhelmed. I wish you luck.

Good Luck!
