3.5 year old always wants to jump.

Hi ,

My 3.5 year old son always to jump on the couch, runs around the house and does not sit at one place, I see the same problem reported by his school teacher that he does not sit at one place to do his jobs (he is in a Montessori school). He does not want to write his homework. He avoids it a lot and we as parents need to out a lot of effort to make him write his homework. I have tried all methods in terms of bribing him with candies, stickers, surprises, cars (as he loves cars), trains...

I am running out of ideas on how to make him focus on a particular job that he is doing and making him to sit at one place without jumping.

Please help me analyze the issue. Any pointers would help.

Thanks,
Parent

Your Doing GREAT! Don't listen to them!

It is so absolutely inappropriate and detrimental to a child at 3.5 to be doing any type of homework. I feel you son is very wise and knows that this is not at all developmentally appropriate. Read Wordoff school information. Read Project Construct. Any preschool teacher who is insisting your child put a pin or pencil or crayon in their hand at 3.5 and insisting they do the work, knows nothing about age appropriate development. You need to discuss this with them, or find a new daycare (preschool). Children at this age should be playing and touching clay and dirt and digging and playing with toys. This should certainly not stress you out! You are a good mother and have been told that your adorable 3 year old should act 7! Your child will pick up the pencil and write when it is age appropriate. Did you know that forcing a child to do this too early can actually hurt their development. Your a good mother, because you are searching for answers. Have confidence that your child is normal and smart and knows what is best for him. I have taught over 17 years and I almost have my PhD in Early Childhood Education I am also a college professor.

My son was the same way.. he was later diagnosed with ADHD.. I agree with the first response, consult a specialist... Sometimes 3.5 is too young to diagnose, they may just put it on hold until kindergarten (or later)...
However (!), you may just have an active child who needs to be challenged..
