Cod Liver Oil for Help With Focus

by Cami
(Texas)

My son, age 7, was diagnosed with SPD and has been seeing an OT for a little over a year. It is possible that he may have ADHD also but it's not definite. I have been doing a lot of research on fish oil to help with his focus and hyperactivity and was wondering if anyone has used it for their child with SPD. He is so smart and just needs a little help to focus in school. He has been taking cod liver oil for 3 days so we are waiting to see if we can see results from it. Please let me know if anyone has had experience with it with good results. Thanks!

Cod Liver Oil
by: Cami

Thanks so much for the comments. It's now been almost 3 weeks and his teacher has seen improvement in his focus. He was even nominated for Student of the Week at school this week. I am giving him Children's DHA (Nordic Naturals) and it's 1/2 tsp a day. I would recommend this to anyone who's child has trouble focusing. It was definitely worth trying and it seems to be beneficial so far.

We give our daughter Nordic Naturals
by: Anonymous

Hi,

We give our daughter Nordic Naturals Omegas (cod liver oil) - it comes in different flavors that masks the fish taste. She especially likes Strawberry or Orange. It's tested for purity, which I think all the good brands are.

Our doctor said to give her two teaspoons - curious what everyone else is giving their child.

Thanks for the great post!

fish oil

One of my twin boys (4 yrs old) was just diagnosed with SPD a couple of months ago. We started OT twice weekly about a month later. Around the same time I started giving both boys Dr. Sears fish oil capsules. We now have a MUCH happier, kinder, gentler little guy! Between the OT, fish oil and parent education regarding SI something is definitely working in his/our favor. I'm SOOOO thankful we were able to find something to give our little guy what he needs to become a more socially appropriate member of society.

Fish Oil

We don't use fish oil, but we switched him to Silk Plus (soy milk. This particular type has added flaxseed oil which has the Omega-3's in it. We also buy a peanut butter that has flaxseed oil in it. I don't know if you will get any immediate benefit, but maybe long term these things will help as the brain develops. I find magnesium and zinc supplementation to help with sensory and attention. One study on ADHD showed magnesium worked as well as ritalin. Just check with your doctor before adding any supplements. Good luck! My little guy is 7 and I know what it is like.

Cod liver oil

My son takes Omega 3 Fish Gummies that have Fish Oil in them. I was told it helps with focus. He has been taking them for about 2 months now and not sure if it is really helping. Not sure if he is getting enough. He has matured a lot over the last year but it is still very hard for him to focus.
