Conversing

My 5 year old daughter will not talk at school to anyone except her friends. The teacher has been very good but still hasn't got a word out of her. At home there is no problem she seems fine. At school she isn't lagging behind, and she likes to go to school and in the playground she is as noisy as all the children.

No talking...
by: Anonymous

It seems like no one really knows why they stop talking but as long as they are talking at home they should be fine. We think my nephew did it because he is shy and was nervous and then when everyone made a big deal about him not talking at school, he became more nervous about it and then became scared of the reaction he would get if he then started to talk.

He did finally start talking in April so it took him over a year and a half in school to feel like he was confident enough to start. We just stopped talking about it and let him decided when he was ready and eventually he started to talk. I am also a teacher and I have talked to many kindergarten teachers who say this is really common and it usually goes away when they feel more comfortable and not to worry to much (as long as your child is talking at home - and it sounds like she is.) Good Luck

I agree that this may be selective mutism, but why? What is going on that she is using this outlet? Does she need input? Is she getting too much? Nervous? I would want to know why only in classroom.

Selective mutism

I think she may have what is called "selective Mutism" You can google search it and find out tons of information. My nephew did the same thing, it is his second year of school now - he turned five in August - and he has still not said a word to the teacher. Good luck! It can be really frustrating.
