Diagnosis

(uk)

From the check list, I notice my nearly 5 year old son has many of the symptoms of under responsiveness to touch, movement, sound, smell, oral and visual input but not all. He is not a risk taker for example.

His teacher put his name forward for behavior assessment 6 months ago but we're still waiting and it's getting worse. Shall I take him to my doctor instead? Friends and family think he's fine - just a 5 year old scallywag - but I know in my heart somethings wrong. I just want it diagnosed so we can help him.

Still waiting...

Another 2 months on and I'm still waiting for a diagnosis. The NHS is just not working!!! I'm thinking about going private now but we can't afford it. But the longer it takes, the worse it will be for my son in the long run...

Yes I took him to the doctors today, along with the checklist I also got his teacher to give me a of problems he's experiencing in school. The doctor was very impressed and pleased that i'd done the research and saved her some time.

She's sending both lists and a recommendation to the special needs department to push his assessment forward. She is also going to speak to his teacher which is great - a much better reaction than I was expecting!

I'm so glad we went, and that I did my research first. I really felt that my concerns were taken seriously. Fingers crossed, we'll get the assessment soon.

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

follow you gut. like it was previously posted, don't wait on others and although loved ones mean well and want to reassure, you're most likely right. make that appointment. there is so much help available. so many resources, therapies, etc. if you suspect spd, print this symptoms checklist on this website and do it before you go to your initial visit. that will save some time. also, the book Out of Sync Child has a great checklist in it as well. so many of these children just need help/tools to self regulate and know how to deal with their challenges in effective, positive ways. which so often looks like a behavior issue, but really isn't. Good luck.

Yes I think your right about family and friends. I know they mean well but i think their being blinded by love. I'm going to make an appointment for him ASAP. I hope we can get a diagnosis before the new school year starts.
Thanks
