had to put my 8 mth old female rabbit to sleep today, it was heartbreaking, my 4 and half year old picked her up by legs and swung her around and broke her back, he was really really punished but I am so worried, that my son has a problem, we have always had animals, and never mistreated them, and he has always been shown how to look after them, how to hold them, and always told off if he held them wrong, and we went through the whole process of bringing her home and burying her letting him see what he had done I know that this was probably harsh, but it had to be done,I need help with him as I am so scared in case he has a problem.

Take a deep breath

Its hard to know exactly what goes on in our child's mind. There could be many reasons why he did what he did. Sometimes young kids just don't think and aren't fully aware of the consequences of their actions. Since I'm just working with what you've written, if this was an isolated incident, then its an unfortunate lesson he had to learn. BUT if this type of aggression is a growing trend or if he has difficulty knowing the difference between right and wrong, perhaps its best to address the situation with your family doctor. It might lead to a visit with a psychologist to further help you pinpoint what is going on with your son. The best solution is knowledge, the more you know, the more you can help your boy.

It may also be worthwhile to start writing a behaviour diary: jotting down when his behaviour was off or agressive and what the situation surrounding was. Over time, this might be able to help you notice trends in his actions and what are the things that set him off.

Take care and good luck to you and your boy.

"the right thing"

I don't believe in this case there is a "right thing". You know your child best. You know how developed his concepts of death and kindness are. This would be devastating to me, so my heart goes out to you.
