Ethan's SPD journey

by Ethan's mom
(Elk Grove, CA)

Ethan is now in first grade and required to complete daily homework assignments. It was difficult for him to sit still while concentrating on his homework and I was determined to find a solution.

I purchased a large red rubber ball. The kind of ball used at school playgrounds. The ball was deflated until it was about 3/4 full so it would not roll. I placed the ball underneath the desk that Ethan uses to complete his work. While he is working on math or spelling, his feet are kicking the ball, moving it back and forth and sometimes squeezing it. The activity allows his lower extremities to be active and seems to help with his concentration on homework.

Also, I no longer have to tell him to sit still and instead encourage him to keep his feet on the ball.

Creative Idea
by: hartleysboys.blogspot.com

That is a great idea! It also works to wrap a big rubber band around the bottom legs of the chair to keep his feet busy. Also things like an exercise ball to sit on, or a step stool to place his feet on will help keep him in his chair and learning.

Good luck!
