Ian's Story

by Anna
(Rockford, IL)

My son Ian, who is 9 years old now had been diagnosed with SPD since he was 2 1/2. He has had speech and OT therapy through school since then. My problem is that the school system wants to diagnose him with Autism and I keep fighting with them regarding this. I know that SPD is not recognized in school but I am now very frustrated because the things I thought were helping him are not. I do not think they are really treating SPD just what they see. I am also very frustrated that no one for years could not point me in the right direction for my son. He does have an appointment with a Psychiatrist to reevaluate for SPD because everyone is telling me he does not have SPD.

My biggest thing is no one wants to seem to help my son and myself on what we should do and/or go. Thank you for this site, really gives me some perspective.

Amazing moms in Rockford, IL and everywhere,
Please don't allow the school system to label your SPD kids with a diagnosis of autism. They will try every time because it's easier for them to call it autism since it's a broad spectrum diagnosis. I know, I've been there! Mine is 11 now. Ask for an autism specialist to rule out autism, even if some of your childs spd behaviors mimic autism, you know in your heart thats not what it is! Stay strong amazing moms,God gave us these special kids for a reason. They definitely teach us as new way of thinking and allow us to be more sensitive and kind to others. God makes SPD children with so much more love inside than others, that's why they are extra sensitive! Make sure you tell them that with a hug when they start asking you "why am I like this?"

looking for others
by: Anonymous

I live in Rockford Illinois and have a son who is 9 with SPD. I have been struggling since he was about 1 year old to find help and someone to guide me as to how to help my son. He has an IEP and has been diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. He does get pulled out at school for math and receives speech but he is struggling so much academically. I have had to fight for all the help he receives. I would love to connect with others in Rockford as I have not been able to find much support. I am looking for a good counselor to help him with coping. Please feel free to e-mail me to discuss ideas or suggestions. michelle.lara25@gmail.com.

Hi!
I would suggest attempting to get an appointment with a developmental pediatrician. We had to jump thru a lot of hoops to even be scheduled with one, but i am hoping for answers so we can help my little guy out.

Fortunately his school was very receptive to his issues, and what we thought was run of the mill ADHD is more likely SPD... Good luck!!! And remember - we can't back down when it comes to our kids!!! Go with your gut!
