Introducing my son w/ SPD to holiday guests

Hi,

My 7 year old with Sensory Processing Disorder is meeting my future father in law for the first time on Thanksgiving. Anyone have any tips on explaining the issue to my elderly father in law and/or how to make the day run smoothly? I am especially needing advice on how to explain that my son's "quirks" aren't behavioral issues.

Thanks!

Introducing son to future father-in-law NEW
by: Anonymous

I would make sure you have your fiance let your future inlaws know about your son's SPD, what it means and how it may affect his behavior. I, along with my friends, always find that advance knowledge is better and people are more accepting if they are prepared. Its so great when I introduce my grandson and there's no forced hugging by the people meeting him for the first time. It also avoids any other problems for him if people understand what his "triggers" are. Hope this helps! Good luck!
