jordan's grandmother

by Linda
(Norman, OK)

Absolutely SPD is real! But finding ways to help our child has everyone in the family nuts. She cannot stand clothes that touch her, shoes that fit, items that "feel bad" etc. Because clothing is such an issue she often looks, in the words of her father, "like we found her under a bridge somewhere."

This disorder is bleeding over into social problems in school, as the other kids tease her mercilessly. She is a very bright 8-year-old, but is now struggling with reading, and it seems to be related to her social adjustment. I am curious to know whether any of your kids with sensory problems were conceived by parents with drug problems or during a time of drug use.

No Drugs
by: Anonymous

I have four children and took care of myself the same during all of my pregnancies and my 3rd child had SPD. I would think that drugs could increase your child's chance of having a problem because it alters their development during pregnancy. I don't think that it could be the only way to have problems. My daughter is turning eight and struggles with clothing and shoes and says that she hates reading because she can't do it. It is a roller coaster and I would love to be able to get my family off of this ride.

My son hasn't been diagnosed yet, but if he is, I can tell you I took absolutely NO drugs while pregnant with him. I didn't drink caffeine or any alcohol (I don't drink) and I didn't really eat a lot of meat because I am a vegetarian. I had a normal pregnancy except for my first trimester when I had some unexplained bleeding that I thought could have been a miscarriage. I was on bed rest and it cleared up with no further problems but I have to wonder about that now.

Still Wondering
by: Michele

I have often wondered about the relationship between drugs-legal and illegal-and SPD. I had epilepsy for 26 years, during both my pregnancies I took different meds. My first son was born with a heart problem and had heart surgery at 3 months of age. My second son is our SPD boy. I do wish I knew more. My husband says I shouldn't blame myself--that God gave us two wonderful, smart unique children. I guess he's right, but still, if only.............

Sensory Disorder and Drugs
by: Anonymous

You pose an interesting question. Our daughter is adopted and her birth mother is believed to have used drugs early in her pregnancy. More research needs to be done in this area.
