Learning to understand

by Stephanie
(Maryland, USA)

I have a 9 year old boy who is charming, bright, funny and very creative. I often find myself saying he is too mature for his age when it comes to knowledge of facts and understanding feelings. For years we have had difficulty with sensory. I have recently learned of SPD. We do not have a diagnosis but I think this is what we are living with. Our daily struggles can be overwhelming, learning to understand and accept this disorder has not been easy. I wish I could work with other children with this disorder so I can teach, learn and connect with other families so living can be more enjoyable.

Getting past the clothes with tags and seams, the underwear and socks, shoes, eating habits due to textures, even down tot he sheets with "seeds" on them. it is all very interesting to me. I have sympathy for all families living with this.

The thing that keeps me going is the love for my son and just the thought that we will get through this!! One day at a time, one step at a time, one issue at a time and we will persevere!
