My son licks things or he'll stick his tongue out and run it across the floor or the couch but that's mainly it. He's not afraid of loud noises or anything like that, I'm just wondering is it normal.

My little one is 16 months old and you could be describing her to a 't'! She licks us, the furniture, rocks, keys, whatever. She wants to put it in her mouth but I have told her no so much she knows she is not supposed to and so now she licks everything. She still puts stuff in her mouth too if she knows we aren't looking. She will stuff her mouth with food when she eats until she looks like a little chipmunk. She won't hold our hand or touch the rocks in the driveway with her hand flat. She doesn't talk yet so we are learning sign language. She gets very frustrated when she is trying to tell us something and can't figure out how to tell us. She wants the hand sanitizer all the time, so I have to keep it hidden so she doesn't see it. There is so much information out there, don't give up, don't stop until someone listens and helps you and your child. I wish you the best!

my 2 yr old daughter does this. she licks our pants, the sliding glass door, almost everything.. and everything is in her mouth.

i will say this, think really hard about your daughter's behaviors.. is her behavior disrupting your family life? is she fearful of noise, crowds, have aversions to textures? i just thought my daughter had quirks, but it got to the point where it caused anxiety for us to go out in public b/c we knew she was gonna have a meltdown and be inconsolable.

at her 2 yr appointment i just mentioned this to the dr and after talking more in depth about her behaviors, the dr diagnosed her with SPD and we started with the FIrst Steps in our area.

if your gut 'mom' feeling thinks that something is wrong, get it checked out.. dont wait. early intervention is the key. read about SPD,educate yourself..

My daughter does the same thing and as she got older the signs started showing she licks lotion off her hands, toothpaste she could just eat, things like that. some time it's for them to learn what's is food and what is not food. but when she got older it seem so be a oral spd thing. you will know when she gets older. My daughter did it so much that i had to lock things away to keep her out of them for her safety. she is 8. so when they get where there old enough to reach on the tops of things, you had to lock them away.

Almost any behavior that we do not see in adults COULD be a sign of a problem. The thing is all kids do weird and unusual things from time to time. One odd behavior does not mean there is something wrong. However, if this continues and other things that seem odd happen, you need to look more closely.
