get a new doctor
by: Anonymous

Yes, get a new doctor. Your doctor is not listening to you, why would he not let you get him further evaluated. What you describe is not normal, plus like others said, the schools only provide so much therapy a week. He sounds like he needs to see an OT as well. I would ask for an OT eval. Let us know what you find out.

Take cahrge!
by: paulette etcheberry

Hi there
Get rid of that incompetent doctor!! unbelievable you are on the right track by being concern so take full charge of the situation. Find an OT and ST that will help him with phonetics and language that takes at least twice a week for forty five minutes. They will evaluate him and design a program that fits his issues and you will see good improvement within couple of months at least that was in my case with my son. Same story with Occupational Therapy you evaluate him and the specialist will help him with fine motor skills ( such as putting your pants on, or snapping your buttons etc) my OT works with little tweezers so he can start picking up objects etc. Don't loose your faith I WILL also buy The Out-of-Sync Child as a reference it is a wonderful book that identifies all types of Sensory Processing Disorders and indeed was of great help for understanding my little one. Regarding the School system, to me its them who is failing because they want to mold our kids into "one system fits all" type of education and that is total complacency.

If you can afford it, there are other methods that can help your sons self esteem by developing his needs just by respecting his own learning path. Private places such as Montessori are great for taking pride in teaching the kids to be self sufficient, they just wait until the child is neurologically ready to start a new challenge; and I do find that great! I have even thinking in taking my son towards that type of school if his private school doesn't help. Your baby's self esteem is the most important thing so if you have to do kindergarten three times, beat it!! find a group that can help him with the right tools and surround yourself with knowledge, I have done it and still have hard time understanding Auditory and Sensory stuff, that's why I ask questions, go to the bookstore and buy books etc. Remember the future is bright if you take full command of your child's Problem. GOD Bless.

school therapy may not be enough
by: Anonymous

School therapy is not enough. He probably only gets it once a week for 30 min. and that is alot for schools. He may be in the session with 3,4,5 other children who may have other language issues. NOT ENOUGH!!!!! change his pedi. to one who will refer to an private clinical. Sounds like he also is in need of OT. as well. He will get therapy 2x weekly for minimum of 30-45 minutes in private clinic.
