Need a school for 1st grader with spd

by Carmen
(Westchester, NY, USA)

My grandson was diagnosed with Sensory processing disorder and is entering the 1st grade. They live in Westchester but travel everyday to the Bronx. Would like to know if there are schools that are small and know how to interact with children with SPD? All help and advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

I hate to say it, but the public schools are not that great, most teachers don't understand this disorder, but on the other hand private schools can't offer you special services like OT, etc.

Best case would be a private school where the ratio of students to teacher is low. My son is 7 and although he has never been diagnosed with SPD he some characteristics of it. I wish I could afford to send him to a private school or even home school him. His K teacher really didn't work with him. We put him on ADHD meds over the summer and this has helped him concentrate more and hopefully his 1st grade teacher will work with him.
