No Licking... The Floor Is Dirty!!!

by Krystal
(Gladewater, TX)

My two year old son has always had his share of quirks, most recently being his fascination with licking everything. He's been very recently diagnosed with SPD.

Well, one day, he was playing in the kitchen, minding his own business, when my husband and mother-in-law came in. When he realizes nobody is paying attention to him, he drops to the floor and starts licking the kitchen floor. We are all yelling at him to stop, that the floor is dirty and yucky. So then my son gets up, goes to the table, gets a napkin, then goes back to the very spot he was licking before and wipes it off.... then he starts licking it Again!!!

We were laughing so hard at him. Sometimes my silly boy is too smart for his own good.

We are really not alone!
by: Anonymous

Thank you so much for your story. I was absolutely perplexed when my son was suspended from bus service last year (he was 4 at the time) for licking the bus windows. So gross!!! I am sure it caused a stir on the bus, which probably prompted him to do it even more. He sure does love to make people laugh!

kids lol
by: Alisa

My oldest son who has now been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome when threw a licking phase and drove every mad lol. I never knew about sensory issues back then and I could not figure out why he was doing it. I look back now and understand as I have read many web pages about many topics and I wish I knew what I know now back then.

Licking in evaluation
by: Anonymous

I have been pulling my hair out for 2 years now with my 3 year old. EVERYTHING goes in the mouth!!! Not one of our hotwheels actually has wheels anymore. I finally called the schools to evaluate him, he is not officially diagnosed yet but a parent knows. They were trying to play with him and he was hiding under the table licking the metal legs!!! I feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest and I can breathe easier knowing I can finally help my son. Thank you for this web site!!!!!!!

love it!
by: Anonymous

Love it! My son who just turned 3 was licking the wall at the end of our booth at a restaurant! My husband and I were floored! Since then he tries to lick our legs, arms, hands and mirrors all over the house. I had no idea so many other people have experienced this SPD quirk with their kids! What can you do, but laugh!

Licker
by: Jill D

We caught our daughter at age 3 licking the driveway and the car tire. She was just so compelled to experience them by oral means.

I had FORGOTTEN about the licking!
by: Anonymous

oH MY! LOL!

I had completely forgotten about dd's licking phase. I think she was about 3-4yo, but maybe as young as 2. She went through this stage where she would LICK people's faces instead of giving a kiss. She was really insistent about it, and thought it was the funniest thing ever no matter how much the recipient protested. I can't remember how long it took before she finally came around to giving normal kisses on the cheek.

And then we had the time during potty training when a drop splashed on the seat, and she licked her finger to spit-clean the drop on the toilet seat. I caught her wrist as her finger headed back toward her mouth, while exclaiming, "We do not lick the toilet!!!" Things I never thought I'd say as a parent...it wasn't exactly licking the toilet directly, but ... well, y'all have been there ... it was the first words that came to mind as I was diving toward her in the nick of time... LOL

Delicious dirt
by: Anonymous

Ha! At the age of two, mine would sit with his back to me so that he could munch on chunks of dirt without getting caught. It was like a little boy with a chocolate bar!

So glad I am not alone
by: Anonymous

This made me laugh. My son who is almost 3 licks EVERYTHING; the fridge, screen doors, our car, neighbors cars and the list goes on if you try to stop him he only sneaks to something else to lick. It is refreshing to know that My son is not the only one that licks.

Hysterical - I can totally see it
by: Cecily

Oh my gosh, that's just a riot. My son finds "Ghost Patricks" (like Mirror Patricks, but in windows instead of mirrors) wherever there is a pane of glass, and he licks them. By way of affection, I think. This sometimes means the oven door, which of course is disgusting. No floors yet.

That's Great

I have to say that's really funny. I know how it feels to mouth things. I will almost put anything in my mouth!
