Ok . .

by Melinda
(Gresham, OR)

My son is ADHD. It was suggested that his ADHD might be aggravated by a sensory disorder. So I got online to do some research and . . . my daughter has a lot more on this checklist than he does. Weird.

Melinda: I agree - there are so many "hidden handicaps" out there - my son's teachers say he has AD/HD but Pediatrician thinks otherwise - get an occupational therapist to do an eval - you well very may have a wrong diagnosis - Do your research - Dyspraxia is something else to look into - Sensory Disorder and Dyspraxia kind of go like hand in hand - SD can be a "symptom" of ADHD but it can present just in itself - I agree with anonymous - research, research, research - and if your child has ever had hearing problems you should research the symptoms of Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Good Luck.

Melinda: get yourself informed on SPD and ADHD...They go hand in hand very well for some...Become an advocate for your children....since I don't know the ages of your children, the earlier the better. A great book or 2 to start "Sensory Secrets - Jump Starting Learning in Children" and also "The Out of Sync Child" are great places to start. You can find them on Amazon, Borders, etc. Talk to your children's teachers, specialists at school, especially an OT if they have one, your pediatrician, school nurse, and speech pathologist. Look for help online too to get started and then GO! You might even check into your local hospital or clinics for workshops, etc. Best wishes........
