Picky Eater for Life

by Beth
(Memphis, TN)

OK. So I'm sure none of you want to here this but I am 29 years old and believe I have this--I am a picky eater and have been my entire life.

It's the TEXTURE of things that I can't handle, in general. I love the flavor of strawberries, bananas, oranges, etc but I CANNOT eat one! This also happens in the vegetable category--onions, peppers, etc. I have learned to try different varieties as I may like one and not the other. I do NOT eat iceberg lettuce. I can find a single shredded piece in a Taco Bell taco! It tastes very bitter to me. I LOVE fresh spring mix and other "dark green" varieties of lettuce.

Do NOT give up on your loved one! Encourage them to try it all once! And let them know it is OK to throw it up (I hate when that happens! Still does sometimes to this day--esp seafood!) or spit it out. Who knows what they will like?

Good luck and God bless!

Finally

Beth, I am the exact same way! Especially with the whole lettuce thing. It's something with the crunch of it that I cannot stand and I will pick it out of the Taco Bell taco the exact same way. I cannot stand anything mushy like yogurt, pudding, bananas.....I want to like these things and have tried to eat them many times over the years, but I just gag and spit them out. None of my foods can touch and I never mix them. I eat all of one before going to another and once I move on to the next one do not go back to the previous. I have been judged and criticized by family and friends for this my entire life. Now I have children of my own and my oldest is an extremely picky eater. Everyone blames it on me. I am so thankful for this website and finding out that I am not alone in this and that it is not my fault.

Thank you so much! It's nice to find that there are others like me out there.
