Possible Sensory Processing Disorder

by Sally Haines
(Salem, MO USA)

I know the parents of a 4 year old boy who have concerns about some of the things he does. Upon waking up or when he is tired he will rock on the floor or bed. Also he has been a head banger when frustrated, but they say that is becoming less often. He is average in his speech and language and seems to possess normal intelligence. They were curious as to what this might mean. I thought he might have some sensory issues. They have spoken with a doctor who doesn't appear concerned. So does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like Sensory disorder to me. Definitely get testing done...Therapy will help!! My son just turned 4 and has been a "head banger" since he was about 17 months. Noticed speech delay had him tested and has been in ST since he was 28 months and diagnosed with SPD at 2 1/2 yrs. Thought he was an out of control child that got upset easily and banged head on everything. Also has food sensitivity and delayed toilet training. He is doing much less banging....when he does we hold him tight and just love him. Very important to be as patient as you can be, and LOVE your child.

I would suggest that they go to the Early intervention in their area- the Regional Center in CA- or to the local school district to be tested - this way they can find out what it is and will give some help for the child if needed-
