my 31/2 year old son has sensory issues and refuses to use the potty, i have tried everything from reward stickers to candy toys,buying different potties, everything!! please help??

My son turned 4 in August and we finally have had some success with potty training him. He didn't want to sit on the potty either and I wasn't sure he could even tell when he had to go to the bathroom. I got a book that was very helpful and has helped us get him mostly potty trained now. It's called "The Potty Journey" by Judith A. Coucouvanis. What also helped was letting him use an iPad while sitting on the potty. He needed a very strong incentive to sit, plus rewards when he had success. What I learned from this book was that some kids may not feel or understand the feeling of needing to use the toilet and you start by making a schedule and the child sits on the potty based on this schedule. Eventually they will get it, or they may just continue going when they are scheduled to go. Hope this helps!

This may sound mean, but for me the rewards did not work consistently. For both of my boys, I actually had to take away to show them I was serious about this. For example, with my older son, I took away a favorite show if he refused to use the potty. I have also taken away toys. I know they say not to make a big deal about it but if I didn't both of my kids would still be in diapers. They had no desire whatsoever to use the potty on their own. My younger son is just over 3 and 1/2 and he has just started wearing underpants. He still has accidents occasionally but is doing well. I have also let them know I was disappointed when they decided to go in their pants instead of in the potty. That was the only thing that worked for me. Like you, I had tried everything and anything with not much luck. Good luck to you!
