Potty training

by Erin
(Indiana)

I have an SPD child who is Five years old and we are having HUGE issues with potty training and pooping. I am not sure how to motivate her to go on the potty. I am not sure she can feel when she has to go... does anyone know how to help this issue?

Michele Mitchell comments...

I dedicated an entire (and lengthy!) newsletter to this very topic. I think it should help. You can find it at:

Of course, if anyone else has suggestions, feel free to add anything!

My six year old refuses to sit on the potty
by: Laura

Since I started toilet training when my daughter was a toddler she has always been extremely adverse to sitting on the potty at all. While we have had a few 'breakthroughs' over the years when she would sit a little and even peed once or twice in the potty, she basically won't even try. I would love to converse with you further, Erin, on this topic or anyone else with a five, six year old or older who is not potty trained. The information in Michelle's article on the interoceptive sense is very helpful and gives me a direction to explore.
