Rushed SID diagnosis gives me pause

by Ken
(Atlanta GA)

Daddy, I'm going to put my finger in my mouth, try and stop me!

Daddy, I'm going to put my finger in my mouth, try and stop me!

My 3 year old recently had a visit to a Neurologist and it was spent 1 hour in the waiting room, 30 more in the Doctor's office alone, and 8 minutes with a Neurologist who saw her walk and checked her tone and reflexes and said she had S.I.D.

Well, my daughter didn't display a single symptom to the Doctor other than her incredible fear of being at her office by screaming and crying for the entire time. So how in the world can she be so confident she has this disorder?
The bottom line is she displays symptoms from the Tactile dysfunction list, however has several others from the others as well.

I am beginning to think the only way for an accurate diagnosis is for a specialist to stay with my daughter and observe her with me, the Dad for one full day. In her own surroundings and environment in order to witness what it is I am concerned with. There is no other way for me to feel satisfied my daughter was properly observed and evaluated. Not to mention the bill was an outrageous $1000 for a lousy 10 minute check up and cheap toy that broke before we got home. I am very disappointed!

we went the rounds trying to figure out what was going on with our son, many specialist appts, many evals, etc. but we have found that a good occupational therapist will validate your concerns and help you address them in an effective way. there is a link on this website to finding an ot in your area, here's the link:

i would start there. good luck.

Do you have an intermediate unit in your county?? Check with the public school for more information. IC will provided free service where kids (infants to pre-k) get evaluation from PT,OT & ST. Take an advantage of it ...your child will received the help she needs especially before she starts school. If no IC, check with pediatric PT/OT.... Good Luck!
