Sensitivity to shirt buttons

by Stephanie
(Australia)

BUTTONS
My 6 yr old son has a phobia about buttons.

He is unable to wear shirts that have buttons.
His school uniform is a buttoned shirt with tie.
He tolerates wearing it but only if his tie is completely covering the buttons and he also leaves his jumper on no matter what the temperature inside his classroom.

He gets particularly stressed if he thinks someone is looking at his buttons.

He is able to touch buttons that he is not wearing and can sort them or use them for craft activities etc...

Would appreciate any suggestions to help my son with this fear.

Velcro? NEW
by: Anonymous

Perhaps you could remove the buttons and sow on strips of velcro to close the shirt? I would hope the school is understanding enough to accept that.

My son does not like buttons either. He does not want to wear anything w/buttons. We have tried everything and does not work. He is 6yrs old. Don't understand why.
