Sensory Room Consultant

Hi-- I am looking for an SPD OT, and an SPD OT who can help us design a sensory room. We are in the Westchester area of NY.

Thank you in advance for any information you may have.

Alexis Kashar

------------------------------------------------

I have a couple of questions for you first. Is this sensory room for a home or clinic? Is it for one person or multiple people to use? What level of "functioning" is the client(s) at? What do you want the room to accomplish? Is it for behavioral concerns, preventative, increased stimulation, etc.? Answers to these questions may help me direct you better.

Until then, I will give you a few resources and information that may help.

Many OT's should be capable of designing a general sensory room. If it is only for one particular individual, then it should be more customized by an OT with experience regarding this individual and a variety of sensory integrative theories and treatment modalities.

Perhaps one of the following resources will help your initial search:

1. The International Database of SIPT certified OT's at www.wpspublish.com (there are 13 pages! for NY.

2. The SPD New York SHARE support group

3. If it is more of a "mental health" sensory room, contact Tina Champagne at OT-Innovations.com.

4. If you are instead looking for a multi-purpose large scale multi-sensory room (or can afford a professional for a small one) for a clinic or facility, contact:

  • TFH (www.specialneedstoys.com) who install multi-sensory environments worldwide.

  • Abilitations Board Of Consultants

  • Or, Abilitations multi-sensory room advice and design consultants
