Smells food

by jenny
(Berkley, MI USA)

My nephew is a picky eater. He is four and in preschool and will not eat a normal diet. I am worried about his long term health because of his diet. His parents give in to him just to get him to eat something.

He will only eat certain things and not vary from this list at all and he smells everything first, just to make sure it is the right "brand". For example; he only will eat KFC mac n cheese, but if you make him another brand (kraft?!?!)he looks at it, smells it and throws a fit until they give in and go get him his KFC.

That is just one example. Do you think this a parental problem or could it be some sort of sensory problem? He has been this way since he was a baby. Our family is frustrated and worried.

It certainly sounds sensory to me. Everyone keeps telling me that my son is just very picky and that he's used to us giving in to him, but I can tell you that it is not the truth. There are certain foods and tastes that he will tolerate, and others he won't. Mostly everything is soft in texture (french toast, pb&j sandwich, beenie weenies, fries) except for an occasional apple that he'll chew on and I think it's mainly b/c he likes to chew on things.

If your sister is concerned about her son, then you should tell her to let the pediatrician know and don't let them tell her that it's just him being picky. She has to be her child's advocate. Good luck!
