SPD and Auditory processing and speech problems

by mary
(atlanta)

I have a 4-year old son who I believe has SPD. But he also has some type of auditory processing problems. He also has a significant speech delay. He did not say a clear word until he was 3 years old. But what really bothers me is the processing problems. It is like he does not understand what we are saying to him. Has anyone else had this connection between SPD and auditory processing problems? Thank You!

Get all the testing you can
by: Angela (California)

About six months ago I determined that something else was going on with my twin son than just a speech delay and the horrible three's when he threw such a terrible temper tantrum - pulling my hair, hitting and scratching my face - at the library no less! He had been getting speech therapy for almost two years because he was significantly behind his twin sister. I wish that someone would have suggested then that I have further testing. Speech delays go hand in hand with SPD it seems.

We are lucky that we have insurance and some funds - we are getting psych and OT along with the speech and it has made a huge difference. But a lot of it was also with me in learning that my child was not difficult or I was not laying down the law. He really has problems at the moment with control. He can keep it together at school, but playgrounds can be difficult and with me he lets it all go. He is, however, not autistic. There is a difference. I wish you all positive things in this.
