Spitting and Hitting

My son has SPD and just started kindergarten he is 5 3/4 years old. From the 1st day of school hitting and spitting have been a regular occurrence. He is spitting on the children and hitting both teacher and classmates. I am at a loss as what to do. The teacher is looking to me as what can be done. I am fearful that he might get kick out of school if his behavior doesn't change.

We go over every morning we keep our hands to ourselves and use our words. I even get down to his level and look him in the eyes. Please please help a desperate mother. I love my son with all my heart, but I want what is best for him.

School can't kick out a child for his/her disability . If they are doing that get a lawyer or Advocate. For spitting , rule out for reflux ( or give reflux medicine ) or post nasal drip, these maybe due to allergies , very common in ASD. Try Zinc supplement .
Hitting maybe a Behavior if your child don't have good speech skill . Social stories & books ( hands are not for hitting ) can help. Teach him alternative Behaviour to get people's attention or protest something .

Also check if he has touch sensitivity / can't find body in space / proprioceptive issue .

I would look into getting each of your kids social stories that discus what to do when they get upset. You could also work with the school to set up a special "cool down" spot at school where you, the parents and the school can work on teaching your kid(s) to go when they are getting upset or overwhelmed. I use this with some of my students and it works great. Do not get me wrong, it will take some time and lots of work. Maybe get a special bathroom rug that you set up in the cool down spot at school and the same one at home. This will help with the similarity of that special rug in both places. You could make it a special event, picking out the cool down rug. Ask your schools about getting your student into OT and work on coping strategies. They may also be able to make a social story that you can read with your student at home and school reinforcing the cool down spot. Hope this helps.

We are having the same problem at school-he is hitting everyday (not spitting) and we also go over that "we don't hit" and he always says he understands and is sorry. I am anxious to see remedies that are posted...I could use it too..
