Sucking on Clothes

My 7 yr old son sucks his clothes. He sucks his winter coat & sleeves.




Is this something I should be concerned about or is this just a very strange stage he is going through?

I know someone at school who always sucks on their clothes. my friend would know who I'm talking about.

My daughter does the same - chewing on the sleeves and pencils.

Provide a chewy tube for her to be able to chew when she is nervous and to give her the oral stimulation. Using the brushing technique in the morning and evening has helped my daughter to calm her down and not chew so much.

My sister did that as a kid when she was nervous. But she grew out of it and is completely normal. Just take notice of the situations that make him suck his sleeves, write them down if needed so you can look back on them and see patterns.

But it could just be a habit. my nephew used to do it after we stopped giving him a dummy.

Report it to your pediatrician. It could be a sign of anxiety or another disorder.

My daughter is 5 and has always sucked her thumb and still does at night, however, she too has started sucking on her sleeves, especially now that it is winter. I don't know what to make of it, but that is all new in the last 6 months. She seems to do it out of boredom???

It could be anxiety. report it to the pediatrician.
