Turn Me Into a Dorito?

by Tim Lillis
(Grand Rapids, MI USA)

We have a wonderful little 4 year old who has been diagnosed with SPD. For the purpose of this story I will just say that he is a VERY literal little boy. It is difficult for him to ascertain fact from fiction.

This took place one weekend when my wife was busy with work all weekend so I was on solo duty. We were driving to a park and he was having a Dorito snack in the back seat. His name is Preston:

Preston: (Eating Doritos in the car) "Dad?"
Me: "Yes P"
Preston: "If I eat too many chips do I turn into one? Or is that a joke?"
Me: "It is a joke Preston, did Mommy say that?"
Preston: "Yup"
Preston: (A couple minutes of eating later - talking to himself and staring at his hands) "My fingers are turning really orange... I think it is NOT a joke"

What a darling story. Preston's mom is like so many of us who forget that all children are literal.
Thanks, Tim!
