Very Real

by norma
(atoka,tn)

WE have a 12yr. old daughter with DS named Shaney. We wonder why we've never met another child with DS like her, with her issues. I started reading "The Out of Sync Child". I'm so sure she'll get diagnosed with SPD. Shaney has sleeping issues since infancy. Also,at about 3 yrs. old she used to eat her own poop, sand, and dirt. Thank God she quit that.

Shaney is constantly going, even without a nap and almost no sleep at night. Love to swing for a long time as high as she can. But on a porch swing she can't hardly stay awake. Riding in a car put hr to sleep. Had to do that for a few years to put her to sleep. Hates messy hands. Gosh, I could go on and on about her funny ways. Well I hope to get moving on this and help Shaney right away.

See I never heard of anyone else, either. I don't know why she used to do that. When she did eat those things(poop, dirt, sand) it was like she just couldn't resist it. We really haven't gone to beach in awhile because she hates it so, I'm not sure if she would eat sand anymore.

Very Real
by: Deirdre

Hi, you are the first person I've come across whose child ate poop. My son also ate his poop when he was younger, and no one could ever explain this to me. He no longer does it, but I still often wonder why he did it. The OT he was working with at the time, had never heard of such a thing. She even asked some of her colleagues if they had heard of this, and they had not. My son was diagnosed with SPD, and unusual sensitivities. Thank you for sharing your daughters experiences. Up until now, I thought my son was the only child who ate his poop.
