Wrong Diagnosis??

by Lori
(WA)

I think my son is SPD but he's been diagnosed as ADHD and I swear nobody will listen to me that it's not that...I don't know what to do. He's too old for OT now but he needs help - and they just keep wanting me to give him drugs and now we are talking about getting him on anxiety meds...... HELP

be your child advocate
by: steph

I have a child who is 7 1/2, she was also labeled as ADHD and I was constantly getting negative feedback about her being defiant, fidgety,"annoying" and overly dramatic with her emotions. I took on the school and got her assessed and she was found to have a visual perception problem ( explains the "defiance") and sensory perception issues.....please fight and get your child assessed by and OT and see where you stand...Good Luck!

Never Too Late
by: Anonymous

From what I have heard and I am new with SPD, no one is too old, the OT just has to look into different ways to have the child learn to cope in certain situations.

Never give up because you know your child best and he needs you to fight for him when it seems that no one else will.

wrong diagnosis
by: Anonymous

What makes you think that "they" gave you a wrong diagnosis? Who is trying to put him on meds? the school? Can't you go to a psychologist with knowledge of spd? the thing is from what i have read is most schools will not treat spd because it's not on the DSM scale diagnosis...I think thats why. did you try and hook up locally to see if yahoo groups has a spd support group online? When you say he is too old for OT what age is he? and you say he needs help but what is it he needs? What do you think he needs the if it's not Sensory Integration?

I hope we can help!
Hang in there!
