Should my Tween with Oral defensive SPD get braces?

by Kathy
(Boone, NC)

My Tween (12 yr old) needs basic orthodontics for overcrowding and general alignment. I am seriously considering invisalign orthodontics instead of traditional "ligature" metal braces.

Has anyone else with a oral SPD tween gone through braces?

I have spent 12 years getting my kid to eat basic foods. They may never eat the same things as other kids but at least we have managed to get through primary school in one piece.

If my kid won't eat with braces on what do I do??? Take them off?? I won't let my child starve their growing body simply to improve their oral hygiene!

Almost done with braces
by: Anonymous

Good for you Madison - Hang in there. My son has finally gotten the go ahead to remove his braces in 3 weeks. The Dr. wants to apply a wire to the back of his four front teeth, top and bottom. I am seriously thinking of refusing this appliance. It has been hell with the braces and my son still has choking and gagging attacks when he eats certain foods. He tells his friends that all he eats are ramen noodles - he has become something of a legend at High School.

Me too!

I am twelve almost thirteen with SPD braces. Unless it is ABSOULUTELY needed (like mine) then I WOULD NOT get them. They hurt so bad and it takes away so many things you can eat (so if she already doesn't eat much then I wouldn't recommend braces).

Orally defensive braces strategy
by: Anonymous

Well, we are one and one-half years into braces. Lost some of the hard won foods, mainly nuts, bagels, etc.
Braces are painful! Not just the first time they are put on, but after every visit until they take em off.
I give my son Aleve one-half hour before we arrive for the appointment. Then I give him as many ibuprophen as he wants and he takes them to school the next day.
He will eat only soft foods after his ortho appointment for about 2-5 days depending on what they do to his mouth. He literally lives on yogurt (no chunky fruit varieties), cream of wheat, applesauce and dairy products. I stock up before the appointment.
I prepared the Orthodontist prior to signing on the dotted line. I wrote orally defensive in big red permanent marker on his chart. We see only one Dr in the office and only one assistant so I know they are aware of his condition and respect him. They have to explain everything they are going to do before, and get his co-operation. When they wanted to install a spring, I put my foot down. He has to wear rubber bands but I let him start a few days after his appointment and when his teeth stop hurting enough to go back to potatoe chips.
My best advice - dope her up and let her eat ice cream as much as she wants.
