Trevor at his cousins birthday party

Trevor at his cousins birthday party

I received a phone call from Trevor's kindergarten teacher last Friday. {This is his second year in kindergarten due to the fact the school will not place him in a much needed Special Ed class}

The Teacher starts off with Hello Mrs. Sorrells this is Mason Ranow I am calling you concerning Trevor's behavior in class today. I said what has he done ? He said back to me well He will not stop singing in class. I said singing? Singing What may I ask? He said well he is singing Jesus loves me but that's not important.

I stopped him and I asked well did he sing the entire song or just part of it? He said well he sang the whole song but may I say he was disrupting the class and he cannot... I quickly interrupted again with a shout of Awesome !!!! He said excuse me ? I said Trevor and Me have been working on this song since he was 4 years old and now that he's 6 he has finally learned it!

Well by now Mr. Ranow was ready to blow! I said Mr.Ranow you know as well as I do that Trevor has ADHD combined type, He has Autism spectrum disorder, Sensory integration disorder, expressive language disorder and mild Cerebral Palsy.

Today a little boy with all those things stacked against him learned something new... He was able to retain the words to an entire song and you want me to punish me for it right?

Well silence was there for a second then He responded with "Well will you please tell him not to sing in class anymore?" I said sure I will but you know how those ADHD kids are. Then I added that you could always recommend he be placed in a behavioral class.

"This school refuses to accommodate Trevor's needs and I refuse to punish my shining star for being just what God made him to be "... Trevor is not violent or mean or rude

like the Normal kids are... He is loving and caring and he is the one falling victim to the black eyes on the play ground and being pushed down and called names.

The little boys in his class know he is different and they bully him. On the bus the driver picks on him because Trevor is singing or he is making a noise or someone hurts him and he cries. She yells at him to hurry up when he is struggling with weak muscles to climb the stairs onto the bus.

The world is cruel to these Children. There's noway I will ever punish my child for singing in a class where he struggles to count to 10 still where he is expected to do work he can not do, Where the other kids are laughing at him because he cannot spell his name yet.

They will not place Trevor in a class where he needs to be so they will just have to learn to deal with him. They are never happy anyway.

Mr.Ranow called a conference to discuss Trevor's falling to sleep in class every morning. I told him you know as well as I do that Trevor takes meds every morning at 7 am these meds are Risperdal and concerta and focalin all to please you people here at the school, Now if you would like him wide awake I can stop giving it to him but then you may not like the results. I can tell you your classroom will not be the same.

His response to me was No that okay we will find a way to get him awake. Well just two days later Trevor came home and told me that his teacher is putting cold water in his face every morning to wake him up.

Why do people mistreat children with disabilities? We currently have our house up for sale we plan to move far away from here in hopes of finding Trevor a better situation and hopefully some acceptance.

That is totally ridculous.
by: Anonymous

That is totally ridiculous. I am very in favor of integrated classrooms, but there needs to be the supports in place to create success or it will fail. Also splashing his face with water is abusive and grounds for disciplinary action where I'm from. I'm not sure where you are, but I do know that parents who make their kids real people not numbers to politicians can have a great deal of influence. I would recommend that you make waves, get your kid's story and face into your law makers heart, Skip the teacher, principal, school board and municipality, go for state, provincial, or federal notice. Good luck, I hope you are able to find what your child needs.

Challanges of Autism
by: Anonymous

Praise the Child for Singing Jesus Loves Me......avoid scolding and criticism. Setting of Social Guidelines/Limits in this context would be appropriate. The child clearly needs to be in Special Education Classes and not placed in endless kindergarten....surely as educators You have been taught this.Sincerely, rgc

Autism is Treatable
by: Anonymous

As I read this, it becomes very clear than the major problems are with the system and not the Autistic Child. It is mandatory that the child be in Special Education Classes and not endless kindergarten.Shame on the School System for not facilitating this. Autism is a treatable condition. rgc

Jesus loves me

Thank God for the song Jesus loves me. I am an a certified elementary teacher in the state of Pa. Currently home raising my two children. My son who is in fifth grade is what I term out an out of the box child. He processes very differently from the average child.

As a parent I am learning to accept my child for who God has made him an I appalled that you do the same thing. But concerned you said the school wanted him on medication how do you feel about that? Why does this teacher not captivate on his strengths. I suggest you pull all your resources and educate the school. You have legal rights.

spiritual warrrior

You have a warrior in your hands ... this really touched my spirit, as I have told my son to sing at his last school that treated him like crap.. I realized at some point that his teachers were forced by things unseen. God showed me this clearly, and I began to sing to my son and tell him to sing to himself in class.

This is his warfare... don't stop singing warrior.. God loves you and I do to...
This was my sons favorite song when he was a toddler... we'll sing it in prayer for your son..

I am an educator not teaching yet too busy in administrators office over issues like this.. this will pass.. I live in Greensboro North Carolina. We have educators like that here its everywhere, but there are some great schools here that have autism programs..

Email me if your interested in coming here.. my son was just moved to the best of best.. this was no accident.. I'm sure this was the hand of Christ.. Joyner elementary school. The schools system will place him in an autism school assigned to where you live. Not all schools here with autism are great. this is best for my son.. its great... another I've heard about is pilot elementary school..

God bless you and your precious child.
