11 Year Old Son with Confusing and Troubling Signs of SPD

We have an 11 year old son, diagnosed as moderately dyslexic, who also shows many signs of ADD and now I am thinking SPD as well. He is a gifted athlete, extremely high intelligence. He recognizes that he is hypersensitive to sounds, and takes appropriate measures. The area which poses the most significant problems for our family are his meltdowns prompted by transitions, changes in plans, etc. (He manages to hold it together at school, but often falls apart when he comes home.)These explosive reactions can result in extreme tantrums that can be the undoing of an otherwise pleasant experience, and which can affect the entire atmosphere in our family. I don't know how to help him with ways to accommodate these inevitable occurrences. Help!

I have a 7 year old daughter who is also gifted in sports and academics but has spd. We are just now getting her into OT. Her issues revolve around her sense of touch and smell--like your son she holds it together during school but then lets it all out at home. Her tantrums and problems with transitions (getting to school, bday parties, etc) are major problems that disrupt the flow of our days. I'm going to read the The Out-of-Sync Kid book and we've just started her on a gluten free diet. We're hopeful that OT will help as well as the new diet. At this point, we're going to try anything. We're even going to create a sensory area for her where she can lift weights and do exercises to get her nervous system under control. Good luck to you!
