16 years old with Tactile Dysfunction

by Camille

Ever since i was about 4 years old i have had sensory issues and it is just getting worse. Underwear, seams on socks, itchy clothing, tight clothing, bras, being touched or kissed or hugged by people, food being certain textures, being a very picky eater, mood swings. These are the things i have been dealing with and i always thought it was just mental but it never went away. It is almost like i am uncomfortable in my own skin.. Is there any solution for this?

My son has the same thing

Look up 5HTP on the net, it's at any health food store. After 5 days of taking 1 capsule a day we saw amazing improvements in our sons mood and his tactile defensiveness decreased a lot! 50mg. It is natural and nonadictive it helps your body make serotonin. Which somehow lowers your sensativity. My son has been on it for ayear and it has been a life saver.
Do some reasearch and talk to your Mom about it.

Hi
My son who is now ten had the same issues - hated getting his hair brushed, teeth brushed and would only wear certain clothes. He was diagnosed with dyspraxia and SPD las year. The SPD AFFECTS HIM IN THREE AREA. Tactile being one of them . The OT service he goes too have used a technique called the brushing technique that has worked well with him although he still has some problems problems in this area. But at least now he will hug us and recently got him to wear a pair of jeans and shirt. Major break through. Not sure what else is out there.

Take care

sounds like SPD
by:

It sounds as though what your describing could well be tactile defensiveness associated with SPD. I would look at getting a referral to an Occupational Therapist, its not too late, my daughter has been battling the same things and she's only just been diagnosed in secondary school. She's receiving help and although it may not be able to fully takeaway the problems it helps to understand it! My daughters mood swings have improved tremendously since talking to an OT that knows the condition. I hope you get sorted and feel better soon :)
