My son Jacob is going to be 11 in February, and we have been dealing with SPD issues since he was--well always. He saw me blogging about SPD the other day and finally noticed the many books we have about it. He asked me if he has SPD? Is it a disease? Can we cure it? etc. etc....
I explained to him that we don't want to "cure" him, that we just want to help all of his senses work together. After talking for a while, he looked at me and said, "Cool! I have SPD!" I asked him why that was cool and he said because it explained a lot about why he does the things he does.
The next morning he came up to me and said, "Hey Babe, I've got STD". When I finished laughing I explained to him that an std is definitely not something you want to go around saying you have. Now he's got it right. He has accepted who is a lot easier than I ever did! I thank God everyday for giving me such a wonderful, perceptive, caring son. I wonder if he would have all of those same qualities without the SPD???
