Fragile X Syndrome

My husband's 2 nephews were just diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome, should I be worried about my 5 month old daughter and have her tested?

Hi there.

My sister has three children who all three have a form of autism. I have never had kids yet, but plan too. Should I be tested to be safe for fragile x?

Testing for Fragile X

You need to understand the inheritance of Fragile X. Let's look at your family, you stated it was your husbands two nephews, if the two nephews were his brother's children - there would be no need to test your child, the mother of the nephews would be the carrier, for boys the man passes on the "Y" chromosome and not the "X".

If the two nephews were his sister's children then your husband should be tested for Fragile X. At this time there would be no need to test your child, test your husband, to determine if he is a carrier, if he is not a carrier your daughter is not at risk. If he is a carrier he can only pass on the pre-mutation (carrier status) of the FX gene to his daughters only.

If it is his sister who is the carrier, see a genetic counselor, have the test, rule it in or out.

Keep your head up and hang in their, a diagnosis of Fragile X is not the end of the world, I know because I've lived through four (including my own.)

hugs, Sally
