How can I help my child with SPD listen better?

(Virginia Beach, VA)

My little boy who has SPD and has periods where he will not listen to me when I ask him to stop doing an unwanted, or even unsafe behavior. Usually he will continue doing what I am asking him not to do and other times he will laugh. I don't feel he is being defiant and neither do the women who did his evaluation...but I need to know how to help him. How can I get through to him?

Touching helps with focus

I find that having contact with my son (who also has SPD) works well. So I usually touch his shoulder or hold his hand while I talk to him. the physical contact often seems to help him focus his attention.

Hi,

Does your son make eye contact with you when you speak to him? Tell him to look at your eyes, and make sure he holds eye contact with you when you speak to him.
