Looking For Other Moms/Dads Of SPD Kids Struggling In The Chicago Area

by Stephanie
(Evanston, IL)

We live in Evanston and we are looking to meet other families who are dealing with SPD issues with their child. We feel so alone and it is so scary.

None of our friends understand and our families are clueless as to what we go through on a daily basis.

We would love to find others to connect with.

Twenty-One Senses
by: Rebecca Klueg

Hello All,

I am so happy you started this chat. Finding people who are going through and know what sensory processing disorder is can be so helpful. I work with a local nonprofit that helps families who have children with sensory processing disorders. We offer free monthly webinars, sensory-friendly hours (so you know where your child will be most at ease) and so much more.

To learn more you can visit our website:
twentyonesenses.org

Again I am so happy you have started this chat, being understood is an important part of getting through all of the struggles sensory sensitivities can present. I hope this information is helpful for you.

Help for Kids with SPD
by: Martha

Hello,

I have two kids with sensory processing disorder and I live in suburban Chicago. I also have the disorder myself. Understanding the struggle and the help that we need, I recently wrote a book called The Sensory Processing Anthology, available on amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, Barnes and Noble bookstores and other select bookstores. I wrote this book with technical oversight from occupational therapists, developmental optometrists, audiologists, and mental health professionals. The book presents SPD in a holistic manner with dysfunction described not by each individual sense, but by each type of disorder. The book provides a practical understanding of sensational kids and hundreds of comprehensive strategies to handle challenging behavior and nurture a positive family dynamic. Hope this helps!

Having SPD
by: Jessica

Hey, I'm 19 and I'm not a parent. I have SPD as well as ADHD. I was diagnosed when I was a kid and I guess I'd say my case was quite severe. I pretty much hit every box on the diagnostic check list. I am in college in Chicago at the School of Art Institute which I attend on about a full ride aside from room and board. I am working on my bachelor of fine arts degree and intend on going to grad school to study art therapy. (I say that because I want you guys to know that your kids are going to be okay). I found this page and I thought that maybe my perspective could help you and your kids. My email is walshjessica81@gmail.com.

single mother of sensory seeking twins (3/5 yo)
by: Kate

I live in Evanston, IL and am desperately seeking other parents of sensory seeking young children. My children are adopted and it is only recently that I have come to learn about sensory seeking as I only knew SPD as sensory avoidant and thus presumed my children didn't have it until a preschool social worker alerted me to this. It is very isolating as we cannot do much and friends and family have mostly disappeared, little enthusiasm left for my children with "bad" behavior. The children endanger themselves when left with babysitters so I need to take them to meet other parents. Perhaps together we can come up with strategies for helping our children live richer lives?

We have a 5-year old boy with SPD. He has been working with OTs twice-a-week for the past year. His challenge areas are auditory defensiveness, some social awkwardness and gross motor incoordination. We've learned a TON in the past year (ups and downs!) but he is currently doing really well in his preschool. We're happy to talk about our journey and always happy to meet new friends. Hi,

I posted here last year looking for other moms with kids dealing with SPD. My son, now 7, was diagnosed at 3yrs old and he has improved tremendously with OT, Speech Therapy and attending the Hope Institute Learning Academy in Chicago, a CPS contract school dedicated to helping kids on the autism spectrum, SPD and Speech. I am moving to Rogers Park at the end of August and would love to connect with others and share experiences, therapist info and anything else. I remember starting out going crazy researching this thing called SPD and feeling alone. But it is AMAZING the progress my son has had. You can contact me at encourageville@gmail.com

by: Anonymous

HI,

I have a son that is 6.5 with SPD, ADHD and Anxiety. We live on the Southwest Side of Chicago and would love to hear from others.

I had to remove my son from the public school system due to the school refusing to use his medical diagnosis and labeling him as Emotionally Disturbed in order to send him to a Therapeutic School.

We decided to homeschool because we could never label our child with something that didn't fit. It has been very challenging but he is progressing slowly. At least he doesn't call himself a bad boy everyday like he did when he came home from the other school.

If anyone wants to talk: jmeschab@wowway.com

Thanks,

Jamie
