My Daughter Is Smart On Her Own BUT Is Extremely Having Difficulties Understanding Instructions

My daughter is 6 and is very smart when she tries to figure out things on her own. She started speaking as early as 7 months old and started standing up at 9 months.

She's always the star of the crowd as she speaks like an adult and digest situations in a smarter way than most adults do. She's also very fun loving, playful, loves singing, cuddling and tickling. One time we were hangin out with my friends and one of them is having a relationship problem. As she keeps on telling us the story over and over again, I told her to tell my daughter coz she might be able to help her. Of course everyone knew I was joking. Well my good friend told my daughter anyway. At the end of her story my daughter said "Tita Shai, why do you allow those things to happen to you?" My friends were shocked to hear my then 5-year old speak like that. I myself was speechless and I didn't even know how to react on her words. And it isnt an isolated incident, her thoughts, perception and actions surprise me all the time. She even invents her own songs although words sometimes doesnt really come up together but she's able to make up words to fill in with her own tunes.

But I noticed that whenever I give her instructions, it takes forever for her to understand them. If I correct her and ask her to do the same exercise to make it right, she'll still do the same wrong thing for several times, 5 or more times. And of course, school is all about instructions. She barely gets a passing score with her subject and her teachers keep on telling me the same thing; she's having a hard time understanding. When I ask her what she learned form school today, she keeps on saying nothing or I forgot even though she has an excellent memory. She remembers names, places, directions and can memorize a song by listening to them for just 5 or less times.

Does my daughter need to be enrolled in a school for special children? Does she have mental disability that can affect her entire life? What is wrong with her and how can that be treated? Please help me. I'm a single mother and she's my only child. Please help me and my daughter, please.

I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.

you sound as if you are describing my now 8yr old son. He was diagnosed with Autistic spectrum disorder, aspergers syndrome.

as your child some simple questions like pull your socks up, will she know this is a metaphor??? or hold that door apple of your eye. all good metaphors for children. By 6yrs she should know their meanings. if not get to childrens services, dont let them tell you she will be ok. A mother knows.
Goog luck hope i helped just something to look into.

My son still takes over conversations we have to teach him turn taking, metaphors all taught, doesnt get facial expressions only happy or sad, These too all have to be learned.
good luck

OT

She may have some auditory processing difficulties. I'm finding that with my son, who is 4. Is your daughter in sensory based OT? I would highly recommend an evaluation.

Hello! I am a mother also from the Philippines. I have a two year old son. What i did was to have my son diagnosed by a developmental pedia in Bulacan. My son is currently on Occupational Therapy and diagnosed with global developmental delay. Good luck. I know there are many developmental pedia in Manila.
