SPD and sports

I have a 7 year old boy who loves sports - particularly hockey and baseball, and loves to play goalie and catcher because of the heavy gear. He loves being at practices, the game, loves his team - but getting him there is a different story.

Every time he has to get ready he says the clothing/gear feels weird, and it's tears and yelling - I offer that he doesn't have to keep playing but he wants to still go every time. He just can't get ready without a meltdown.

Once he's there he's happy, nothing bothers him, he gets into the games - but it's so much -SO MUCH - for him to get ready to go.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this part of his SPD or could it be something else, like anxiety? Any insights would be most appreciated.
