DBT teaches coping mechanisms

by f. taylor
(united states)

Dialectal Behavior therapy, originally designed for borderline personality disorder (some overlapping symptoms with spd actually). Cognitive therapy tends to be unsuccessful in patients with deep deep empathy and emotions. We need our feelings validated.

DBT helped me, and I plan to learn more. It's geared toward how to cope and how to handle things as opposed to "think happy thoughts, change your inner voice" etc.

Personally I avoid the news. I have learned to attempt to cut people off if they are trying to share an upsetting news story with me.

I recognize my emotions, allow myself to have them, but when they are overwhelming and i need a break from them i utilize DBT skills such as distraction. Online card games, coloring, etc.

empathy to all
