if a child holds a pencil in a fist then the pencil is to long/big, and its hard for a child to accommodate that size. Take a pencil or crayon and break it in half, it has to be 2 and a 1/2 inches long. Children grasp smaller objects better. Child wont grasp a 2 and a half long pencil or crayon in their fist cuz it wont fit. Give it a try and post back your comment.

Do not afraid if your child with SPD hold a pencil with their fist.At first you might though that it is a sign of violence but that is not really mean by that. The truth is they hold pencil with a fist only for security reason...they felt comfortable holding it as seems that they have companions in school.
SPD child seems to exhibit bad behavior but that is not true, they only have sensory overload that at times provoke them to meltdown.
Oh my gosh, I need some help and it's with a bit of a sensitive subject! My 17 yr old has autism and part of that involves sensory issues with clothing.
