6 year old licking hands

by Chedva
(NY)

My 6 year old son was diagnosed with SID at the age of 3. We have been in OT since and he is now considered a boarderline case. He recently started licking his fingers. He is the type of kid that couldn't tolerate anything in his mouth (including food) when we started. When I asked him why he was doing it, he said he liked the feel on his hands and in his mouth. What ideas are there out there to redirect him?

Gum NEW
by: Anonymous

Gum, my son licks his hands and other peoples faces (I know it sounds odd) and even grocery store floors. The OT suggested chewing gum. He loves it (now we just have to make sure he keeps it in his mouth). It also helps with his teeth grinding.

try massaging your baby's hands after they wipe with a sunscreen for children, in some cases improves the hassle
