Five year old won't interact in Kindergarten

by Barbara
(NY)

My five year old refuses to interact in Kindergarten, to the point that they think he doesn't know his math or letter. He does them perfectly at home, and won't answer or will answer incorrectly at school. He will not participate in class activities and is afraid of the school bell. Could my son have SPD?

Having the same problem, thanks for your comments Lillian, I feel better. I was thinking shyness was a problem.

Don't be worried yet

It could be that your son is simply shy and doesn't want to answer questions at school in front of his classmates. He also may be doing this for attention (especially since you said that he sometimes answers incorrectly when he answers fine at home.) This also applies to not engaging in classroom activities, could be from shyness or just attention. Talk to your son. Ask him why he doesn't answer questions correctly in class. See what his reaction is. Go with your parent instinct and see what is bothering him. This doesn't sound like anything serious and could just be normal behavior for a five year old, especially since he is just starting school.

I would wait to see if his symptoms continue as he gets older. If they don't go away or even get worse or anything else unusual happens, do seek help then. But a five year old just starting school could be indeed frightened and just trying to get accustomed to the new school environment ( which could be why he fears the school bell.)

Just wait a bit ( at least until he is through with kindergarten to seek any professional help)
Tell me if you have any questions or concerns.
