Hand washing, personal hygiene

by Karen
(Texas)

10-year-old girl refuses to wash her hands because she "doesn't like the feeling of soap." Mother has tried many different types of soap, wash cloths, nail brushes, sponges, net-scrubbers, etc. Nothing seems to work for the girl. She will allow others to wash her hair, but will not touch shampoo, either.

She also refuses to wipe herself after having a bowel movement. So she sometimes smells pretty bad, and has had painful rash as well.

This is a smart girl who is able to function socially when she chooses to (conversing, understanding humor, etc.). She enjoys putting on light makeup and fixing her hair and wearing interesting clothes. So it's not like she doesn't care at all about her appearance.
