SPD meltdown on the plain

by Merci
(UAE)

Hi.I am just starting to look for information. Our son was diagnosed few months ago with SPD and it is still so stressful for all of us. We are planing to go for holiday but we really worry because if we are out our son never sleeps and he is out of order. We would like to find a way how to calm him when on the plain. We are thinking about pills.Could anybody suggest us something. When our son is out of order he is hurting himself, he acts like he is not normal. Thanks for answer

meltdown on the plain
by: Merci

Thansk very much for your comment. Its so appreciated. We do feel so many times so lost and even little help means a lot.

Our son was always difficult and my husband would put him on his shoulder which helped. But on the plain it is impossible to do so.Other thing we have tried is to play him favourite movie but when he is tired this doesn't help neither or not for long time.We will fly back to our homeland, we live in different country which is about 6 hours and we really fear that. But we will try what you suggested,to look for different distraction. But I worry that it would mean to jump out of the plain. And believe me as much funny it sounds it is truth. Thanks again.

i honestly would talk to your son's doctor before giving him any pill to calm him down ... before you go to that extreme (which sometimes is necessary) do some dry runs and see what works best to distract and calm your son... it might be hell for a couple days but it'll be worth it when you really figure out what works. take him into a higher than normal stress zone and just try soothing and distracting things. my daughter responds well to tight hugs, coloring and stories. but some kids may need a video game ...buy a hand-held that is able to use headphones and also play dvd's or you could try a crazy new toys that is easily transportable. maybe food .... schedule his feeding to be during the flight... and if he's old enough make sure to have gum for the take off and descent.

most of all try to talk about it before hand and prepare him ... dont lie or leave anything out ...that way he will know what is coming and what is expected of him in terms of behavior. and make sure you keep reminding hiim that there is fun after the plane.

good luck and have fun on your vacation!!!
